We love a perfectly flat tone hole, but you might find that if you simply level the tone hole with our Complete Tone Hole Set files and drill, and then deburr it, that the tone hole is no longer 100% flat.
Try this fail-safe method next time you level tone holes. Remember that in order to level tone holes, the body of the instrument must be straight and true, dents removed, serious low spots in the tone holes corrected through body work, and the tone holes must be round.
Select the tone hole file which best fits the tone hole and the largest diameter of pilot which fits in the tone hole without friction. Apply Ultimax Medium Viscosity Oil to the surface of the file.
Don’t push hard- let the file do the work.
Check your tone holes in a dark room with our SuperNova Leak Light and ourTone Hole Checker Disc.
Level the tone holes until nearly level, with just a small sliver of light appearing between the tone hole and the checker disc.
Deburr the tone hole at this point with a deburring tool or the triangle scraper.
Now use the file one more time with light pressure and level for just two seconds. This should bring your tone hole to perfectly level and with no burrs.
Happy repairing!
