We are honored and extremely excited to Uberhaul Dr. Wyman’s Balanced Action alto! Not only is Dr. Wyman a super cool guy, he is also an influential figure for many of the guys in the shop! Dr. Wyman has kept his alto in very good condition, therefore it will not require much additional time during the Uberhaul. However, we did discover that the bell key tone holes are extremely low and, with Dr. Wyman’s approval, have decided to extend the tone hole chimneys. To further enhance his Uberhauled alto, Dr. Wyman also opted for side key contacts, a G contact, and to replace the octave mechanism with our Teflon ball mechanism.
This foot on the low C guard is coming unsoldered, so we’ll resolder it for extra stability.
We’ll add key contacts to the side keys!
Dr. Wyman requested to use oversized metal resos like the ones that are currently in his horn.
The bell key tone holes are uncharacteristically low, so we are going to build them up during this Uberhaul.
Aligning the posts.
Close-up of the new RooPads installed. This horn is playing great! Dr. Wyman is coming by to pick it up soon!
We installed crescents in each of the palm key tone holes to lower the pitch.
Cutting this crescent to size.
Gluing the new neck cork! That means this horn is just about finished!
We had a great day with Dr. Wyman in the shop, including lunch at Flaming Amy’s! It was fun to work with him and he’s happy with his alto. We’ll see you for your first COA next year, Dr. Wyman!
