#WednesdayWisdom: Reducing Roller Noise Part 1: Lubrication

Rollers can add noise to your saxophone’s keywork, especially on vintage instruments with pearl rollers or oblong rollers.  As rollers wear, the steel screw on which they are mounted enlarged the hole of the roller and creates a gap, leaving play which can be quite noisy and clunky.

We developed Ultimax Pivot and Roller Grease to take up space in key mechanisms even when there is excess play, which helps eliminate roller clicks and improves the feel.

To address this, remove the screw and clean.

If it is rusty or corroded, chuck it in a bench motor and rag with Ultimax Medium Viscosity Key Oil and a small strip of 600 grit sandpaper, avoiding the threads. Then carefully clean debris from the threads of the screw and wipe with oil.

Clean the key, paying attention to the threads

Clean out the roller with a pipe cleaner.

Now, apply a small amount of Pivot and Roller Grease to the side of the roller and work through with the screw.  Install the key and check the feel.  If the roller is sluggish or too sticky, apply a drop of Medium or Low Viscosity Key Oil and work through.  Repeat as necessary until you get the desired feel.

For an alternate option, try Ultimax Cork Grease for a snappier feel.
