#WednesdayWisdom: Let’s Talk About Shellac!

MusicMedic Stick Shellac Available in Clear, Amber and Light Amber

In today’s #WednesdayWisdom we want to focus on shellac. Did you know that we offer three types of Stick Shellac? That’s right, we offer two synthetic shellacs in amber & clear and one natural shellac in light amber.

Our Shellac Sticks are the finest available. Many technicians and players feel that a firm shellac which cools to a hard state improves the tone of the instrument.

The primary difference between the sticks is color. Often a more aesthetically pleasing job can be done with shellac that is the same color as the pads. We use the Clear Shellac Stick almost exclusively in the MusicMedic Sax ProShop and the Amber Shellac Stick works great with our tan pads. FYI – both the clear and the amber shellac sticks are available in our Z-Gun Dispenser.

Our Natural Amber Stick Shellac is the traditional choice and we offer a stick that is of the highest quality.

Did you know where natural shellac comes from? Did you say from a combination of natural resins and secretions from the female Lac bug? If you did, you are correct.

The Female Lac Bug

Shellac comes from the female Lac bug secretions off of trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is processed and sold as dry flakes and dissolved in alcohol to make liquid shellac. Did you know that Phonograph & 78 rpm Gramophone records were made of shellac? That’s true up until the 1950s when they were replaced by vinyl long-playing records.

Who knew that such a tiny bug would have such a big impact around the world on manufacturing & music? #TheMoreYouKnow
